Ugnayan, Music for 20 Radio Stations Whitney Biennial
Mar 8–Aug 23, 2026

Artist and curator Aki Onda presents Ugnayan (1974), music for twenty radios composed by José Maceda. Maceda wrote a fifty-one-page score, created separate reel-to-reel recordings of singers and musicians playing gongs and Filipino bamboo instruments, and worked with radio stations across Manila to play the tracks simultaneously. Blanketing the city in sound waves, Maceda’s composition returned music from the concert hall to everyday life.

Aki Onda In the Depth of Illusion:
A Soundtrack for Nervous Magic Lantern
New LP on Room 40
Release date: August 15, 2025
Ken Jacobs, an essential figure of avant-garde cinema, and I had over-a-decade-long collaboration. We first performed fo his Nervous Magic Lantern project at the Argos Festival in Brussels in 2007. Before flying to Europe, Ken invited me to the top-floor loft on Chambers Street in TriBeCa, where Ken and his wife, Flo, have lived and worked since 1965, to experience a private screening. He turned on the apparatus and the image flashed onto the screen: geometric patterns — something of a Rorschach inkblot — rotated as if in a whirlpool, and three-dimensional imagery pulsed with strong flicker. What was weird was that the images did not adhere to the surface of the screen. They stood out, almost floating, like holograms. Then, my eyes started catching physical shapes in the depth of the abstract patterns such as faces, hands, the surface of an oil spill, and they appeared and disappeared like ghosts or doppelgängers. “How does Nervous Magic Lantern work?” I asked Ken. The inventor's answer was something unexpected: "I don't know! I dreamed it and found it through experimentations then stuck to it. I'm not that technical." Well, he is an artist who creates a phantasmagoria of mystery; let the neuroscientists explain the mechanism. The self-made apparatus contains a spinning shutter, a light source, and lenses set in a wooden frame. Ken inserts his hand-painted circular slides between the light and lenses and moved them gently with his hands. The lenses enlarged a tiny portion on the slide, while the spinning shutter gave the flicker effect. Compared to Ken's other works, which are often filled with unflinching political criticism, the imagery of Nervous Magic Lantern is patently abstract, and it examines how our brain regulates our perceptions. In Jonas Mekas' Movie Journal, Ken once said, “We’re stepping towards a deeper incline, something challenging our notion of the way things are. Something impossible.” Elsewhere he stated, “Eisenstein said the power of film was to be found between shots. Peter Kubelka seeks it between film frames. I want to get between the eyes, contest the separate halves of the brain. A whole new play of appearances is possible here.” Nervous Magic Lantern offers up this sort of play in stunning hallucinations, strange visions dancing on the screen.Ken's request for my music was to play “sounds of daily life.” He explained that the project “is an escape,” and that he felt “guilty not having any messages or reflecting the real world. By using environmental sounds to surround us, he continued, “I'd like to be rooted in the real world."Around 2014, I noticed that Ken had a sizable collection of cassette field recordings he had amassed over the last several decades. Street noises in Chinatown, conversations with friends, or any sort of uncategorizable sound around him. I was fascinated and decided to use them as a springboard for composing. One of the unique aspects of Nervous Magic Lantern is that the visual stays abstract while the sound is able to adopt meanings or a narrative sense derived from the quotidian sounds. I wanted to emphasize that point and add almost a sense of documentary. More than that, I simply loved the aural depictions of Ken and Flo’s life. Those also trigger my memories with them. Over the years, during summer time, Ken, Flo, and my wife, Makiko, made a habit of going to their favorite restaurant in Chinatown. Other times, Ken and I had morning coffee at a Puerto Rican restaurant just below their loft. Life and art are inseparable, breaking into one another incessantly. Ken is an artist who always envisioned the impossible. I wanted to see if it's possible to present that vision as something universal, something whole, something running through everyone’s life. A soundtrack for life in the depth of illusion.
That is perhaps what this album is.

Aki Onda’s Middle Of A Moment is the first survey of their installation work in Australia. Concerned with the interplay between ephemerality and materiality, Onda’s practice is one that lends equal weight to object and subject. They considersthe traces of being, placing focus equally on sense, memory, and site. Middle Of A Moment presents several major works from Onda, including their collection of hand bells, and their work that forms a trace of language through air, 'Nam June's Spirit Was Speaking To Me'.

Aki Onda “99 Cent Dreams” (CS / DL) on Dinzu Artifacts, 2024
"I recorded these sound fragments between 1998 and 2003 in and around the Lower East Side (LES), an area in New York City that extends roughly from Canal Street up to 14th Street and from the Bowery (3rd Avenue) to the East River. In the formative years of my cassette practice, I had a habit of walking around with my recorder and capturing very short snippets of sound – at times less than a second, as if taking a photo – as well as some longer segments of deep listening. These recordings carved a dense collage on the magnetic tapes, and I am presenting the sounds here with the same editing style as I captured them almost 20 years ago.” AO

Silence Prevails : Lower East Side Community Gardens During the Pandemic (2020) MoMA PS1 June 2, 2022–January 16, 2023As a part of the exhibition Life Between Buildings, organized by Jody Graf, Assistant Curator, MoMA PS1. Aki Onda's multi-media installation “Silence Prevails: East Village Community Gardens During the Pandemic” explores the past and present of twenty-four community gardens in the Lower East Side. Known for his work with experimental field recordings, Onda’s practice explores the reverberations and manifestations of the past: how does history suffuse a space, and how can memory be distilled? While living in New York for two decades, Onda became interested in the legacy of the Lower East Side community gardens that dot the neighborhood. The resulting project pairs archival materials gathered from community gardens with photos and audio captured in those same gardens from April - August, 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 lockdown. Onda’s recordings document a rare moment in which the sounds of these small gardens overtake those of the surrounding city.In the 1970s, the Lower East Side became a locus of community gardening in New York City, as members of overlapping communities—Puerto Rican immigrants, artists newly moved to the neighborhood for its cheap rents, and anarchist squatters—came together to occupy and transform empty lots into green spaces for gathering, making art, and political organizing. The movement arose in response to the increasing number of vacant lots in Lower Manhattan: with industry and wealth leaving the city, real estate prices dropped, and landlords often found it more profitable to abandon or even burn down their buildings (in order to collect insurance money). Planted on land technically owned by the city or private landlords, many gardens have faced constant threat of demolition—especially as the land began to regain value in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1994, Mayor Rudy Giuliani decided to auction off the gardens to private developers, leading to a struggle documented in a number of the archival materials displayed here. Despite the destruction of some gardens, the Lower East Side continues to have the highest concentration of community gardens in New York City. Community gardens have also played an important role in other neighborhoods of the city, and struggles over the right for community use of land continue today, especially in areas currently experiencing gentrification. Viewers are invited to take a brochure, which offers a more detailed history of the gardens, as well as Onda’s reflections on them.

Aki Onda "Nam June’s Spirit Was Speaking to Me" (2017/2022).Installation and International Radio Broadcasts at Toronto Biennial of ArtExhibition Dates: March 26 - June 5, 2022Venue: 72 Perth Avenue, Toronto ON, CanadaAki Onda has channeled the spirit of the late Korean artist Nam June Paik via radio transmission in Nam June’s Spirit Was Speaking to Me (2017/2022). Paik is known for his association with shamanism, a practice that consistently surfaces in his works. With a portable radio in hand, Onda communicates with his spirit from a distance—collecting field recordings of cryptic broadcasts and messages on anonymous radio stations. The series of séances has been conducted in different cities across the globe, beginning in Seoul, Korea in 2010 and continuing in Cologne, Germany in 2012, Wrocław, Poland in 2013, and Lewisburg, United States in 2014. This work was originally commissioned by documenta 14’s radio program “Every Time A Ear di Soun” in 2017.From March 26 to June 5, 2022, Aki Onda will present Nam June’s Spirit Was Speaking to Me, through microbroadcasting and printed matter at the Toronto Biennial of Art. Broadcasting over two frequencies (88.5 FM and 106.5 FM) that cover the exhibition site of 72 Perth Ave in Toronto, radios are placed as part of the exhibition to symbolize sound waves in the air. The audio work exists as invisible yet discrete and perceptible through the proper medium, recalling the ritual of channeling spirits. Bring your own radio to catch the frequencies.Onda is also bringing Nam June’s Spirit Was Speaking to Me to the international radio waves in a series of international public programs. The program will play, uninterrupted and in its entirety of 50 minutes. For Onda, those broadcasts are a response to how Nam June Paik spread his ideas through TV cable networks and connected to a large number of people at a global scale.

I'm fascinated by the idea of communicating with the spirits of the dead,
the relationship of matter and spirit,
and a form of séance to demonstrate the mediumship. –Aki Onda (excerpt from the forthcoming interview with Kristan Kennedy)

After decades of a twinned music/visual-art practice, A Letter from Souls of The Dead is the first major solo exhibition in the United States by Aki Onda. Commissioned by PICA and curated by Kristan Kennedy, Artistic Director and Curator of Visual Art, this exhibition will feature collections of found objects such as bells, surplus electronics, photographs, and old-fashioned slide projections. The soundtrack for this exhibition was composed by Onda in collaboration with New Yorked-based vocalist
Charmaine Lee
and New Haven-based musician Zach Rowden.

A Letter from Souls of The Dead will also feature an installation of 60 enlarged prints, 50 broken tape recorders, and a suspended print piece, jointly titled "Collage on Cassettes." These works chronicle Onda’s field recordings which over the years have served as a sonic diary, mimicking and manipulating memory over time. This chorus of analog media will create tangible and energetic relationships across PICA’s warehouse space forming a kinship between the living and the dead, the functional and the broken, the artist and the audience. According to Onda, collecting is “an extension of my cassette practice to expand the realm of reminiscence beyond my territory and consciousness -- a sort of collective consciousness in order to reach out to something universal.” A Letter from Souls of The Dead is a physical embodiment and energetic transmitter for memories and souls past, present, and future.

A Letter from Souls of The Dead will be presented at PICA from July 10, 2021, to September 4, 2021. On the opening day of the exhibition Saturday, July 10, there will be intermittent performances by Aki Onda and Portland-based sound artist Marcus Fischer.
These performances will serve to both activate the objects and acknowledge the trauma of the past year, in the US and globally.

Yes, radio transports signals across a variety of distances. But does it leap time...? No. What would happen if it were to jump to the future, passing through both time and space? The sound source of this recording is a series of radio broadcast captured when I visited Morocco in 2010. During the two-week trip to Tangier, Fez, and Marrakesh, I kept making field recordings of daily news or local music programs, recordings which I’ve now randomly edited for this 60-minute piece. Beyond radio’s typical function of frequency relay and capture, I wanted to produce an illusional frequency—collapsing time and space and expanding the territory of our aural imagination. With our activities now delimited by our local vicinity, travel is rare and encounters with others are limited. We have found ourselves hemmed in at a moment of political and social turbulence. I just thought travelling somewhere, even though it's imaginary, could be refreshing and inspiriting for our minds.

SOLD OUT at the label but you can still order HERE

︎Limited Edition of 250 LPs ︎20-page art booklet including rare photographs of Nam June Paik on the set of Michael Snow’s film Rameau’s Nephew (1974), two essays on radio-wave phenomenon by Aki Onda and Marcus Gammel, and a remembrance of Paik by Yuji Agematsu

Nam June’s Spirit Was Speaking to Me occurred purely by chance. In 2010, I was spending four days at Nam June Paik Art Center in South Korea for a series of performances and had plenty of free time to wander. The building was packed with Paik's artwork and related material. I have always felt a close kinship with him as an artist, and so it was a great opportunity to immerse myself in his works and ephemera. It was that night I made the first contact, via a hand-held radio in a hotel room in Seoul. It was literally out of the blue. Scanning through the stations, I stumbled upon what sounded like a submerged voice and I began to record it in fascination. I concluded this was Paik's spirit reaching out to me.The project continued to grow organically as I kept channeling Paik’s spirit over long distance and receiving cryptic broadcasts/messages. The series of séances, conducted in different cities across the globe, began in Seoul in 2010, and continued in Köln, Germany in 2012, Wrocław, Poland in 2013, and Lewisburg, USA in 2014. The original recordings were captured by the same radio which has a tape recorder, with almost no editing, save for some minimal slicing by and mastering.Paik is known for his association with shamanism, a practice that constantly surfaces in his works all through his career. In an interview, he stated “In Korea, diverse forms of shamanism are strongly remained. Even though I have created my work unconsciously, the most inspiring thing in my work came from Korean female shaman Mudang.” Paik himself was a master shaman and vividly used shaman rituals and symbols for staging his performances and installations. These recordings also became a way for me to explore the mythic form of radio—a medium which is full of mysteries. The transmissions captured may be "secret broadcasts" on anonymous radio stations. There are in fact hundreds of those stations around the world, although the numbers dwindle as clandestine messages can now be sent via encrypted digital channels. Some of these stations were likely for military use or espionage or relics of the Cold War. But many others continue without apparent explanation. These are just some of the questions that remain unanswered.

Tarantism is said to be an illness provoked by the bite of the tarantula, the small poisonous spider active in the summertime. The bite causes catalepsy, perspiration, palpitations, epilepsy, and leads those bit to believe they are undergoing an extreme spiritual possession. Its victims were mostly women, more likely to be bit during harvest. As is often the case with ritual and superstition, the symptoms began to take religious significance, inspiring a strain of folk music tradition in the region developed as an antidote. According to popular legend, listening to the sound of particular music instruments (such as violin, accordion or tambourine) and being exposed to certain colors (such as green, yellow, and red, waved as scarves in the healing ritual) provoked an outburst of rage that made the afflicted woman (known as a tarantata) dance feverishly until she collapsed in bed and coalesced. The legend and practice were widespread until the 18th century, subsequently slowly fading out of public consciousness.Onda was inspired by the phenomenon and began to listen to the traditional folk music of the region. These folk pieces are quote into the tracks, mostly in indirect ways but occasionally directly sampled. The tracks were initially composed as the soundtrack for a dance piece, SU-EN Butoh Company’s RAPTURE, premiered at Dansens Hus in Stockholm. Onda selected the images of the Japanese photographer Daisuke Yokota for the album cover. His eerie and uncanny images, evoking the strong detachment from reality, helped Onda to develop his original inspiration.

What does it mean to listen to the Lower East Side? Artist Aki Onda joins us virtually, together with New York–based collaborators, for a gathering featuring field recordings and archival films from the neighborhood’s community gardens. The event builds on Onda’s 2020 project Silence Prevails: Lower East Side Community Gardens During the Pandemic, which reimagines listening as an expansive act—attuning to the environment, layered histories, and the voices of those connected to these green spaces.

Onda invites longtime neighbors and collaborators to share their own relationships to the gardens: Maylyn 'Zero' Iglesias reflects on the work and legacy of the late photographer Marlis Momber, while Brigitte Engler discusses the folded cloth prints workshops at the Green Oasis Community Garden. Together, their contributions form resonant portraits of these living community spaces—sites as layered and multivalent as the gardens themselves.

I’m fascinated by the idea of communicating with the spirits of the dead, the relationship of matter and spirit, and a form of séance to demonstrate the mediumship.

The soundtrack for this exhibition was composed by Onda in collaboration with New Yorked-based vocalist Charmaine Lee and New Haven-based musician Zach Rowden.

According to Onda, collecting is “an extension of my cassette practice to expand the realm of reminiscence beyond my territory and consciousness -- a sort of collective consciousness in order to reach out to something universal.”
A Letter from Souls of The Dead is a physical embodiment and energetic transmitter for memories and souls past, present, and future.

On the opening day of the exhibition Saturday, July 10, there will be intermittent performances by Aki Onda and Portland-based sound artist Marcus Fischer. These performances will serve to both activate the objects and acknowledge the trauma of the past year, in the US and globally.︎ June 16 - 20 (Wed - Sun)

Stack Until It Falls Down was composed by Aki Onda in May 2020 during the lockdown of the COVID-19 crisis. The Fluxus-type score instructs a simple gesture and its repetition. The action of stacking, reflected in the video, suggests activity in our lives or maybe life itself. It’s a recurring cycle that culminates in a potentially unfortunate fate. Stack Until It Falls Down was shot at Hurricane Point – a little known place along the Brooklyn shore of the East River. As one of a few places along the river where two currents meet, Hurricane Point developed as a small island made out of the drifted debris from Hurricane Sandy. This location communicates with the harsh reality of life, and Onda’s simple gesture becomes a metaphor or poetic response to the unprecedented times. The video was made with Brooklyn-based artist and filmmaker Moko Fukuyama and sound designer Daniel Neumann.

Space Studies (2017)
multi-media performance / installation

Sound is a primarily spatial phenomenon. How exactly does sound take shape
and move within an environment? How do dynamics, reflection, and
absorption
transform sound? How does the visual interact with the
listener's aural perception?
With my “Space Studies” performance-installation
project, I explore the interplay between
the acoustic, architectural, and emotional relationships
within a given space. I perform with analog equipment such as radio, tape recorder, slide projector, and
found objects such as a bucket, a mirror, a fan,
lights, etc. I arrange and rearrange these
tools and objects, manipulating the sonic and visual fields within a space as a total
environment.
There is a rich history of
composers drawing attention to sound's spatial qualities – Alvin Lucier, Maryanne Amacher, and Phill
Niblock have designed works that utilize
the acoustic characteristics of a room.
Aligning myself within this lineage, I hope to explore new possibilities by investigating the relationships
between sound and the visual, sound and
movement, sound and light.

multi-media performance

A multi-media performance exploring the interplay
among luminosity, acoustic, and architectural relationships within
the space. Performing with various types of lightning equipment such as
theater lights, flashlights, bare light bulb, mirrors and other objects, I
arrange and rearrange the tools composing the visual and aural as a total
environments. The complex relationship between the concrete and the ephemeral
is explored.
